Beginner - Bulk create spherical holes
Hello,
I am completely new in Fusion 360. SO I have spend the two last days to follow the different tutorials.
I need to create 45 spherical holes into a flat surface. The shape of those should be able to contain 1/4 of the diameter of a sphere.
Something like this:
Here an example to illustrate the fact that only 1/4 of my sphere is contained in the hole:
So how can I create all those holes easily? Should I create a component with my hole contained in a cube and then place it? could I£ create the 2d plan of all those holes in sketch and then easily apply the same transformations in my model? I don't understand how to do that yet.
I want to create this at the end:
Regards,
Benjamin

Copy your ball, paste one on top of one locator ball, then coordinately move the pasted ball to where you want it, and then use the pattern feature to make copies? Best way I can think of if it makes sense to you.

you will most likely want to use rectangular patterns to pattern the feature that creates your divot. the name rectangular might be a bit of a misnomer. might be better to call it parallelogram pattern. the features don't have to repeat at right angles to each other, you can chose any angle you want. attached is a sample file to play with. go through the timeline and come back with questions.
p.s.-don't use the primitives (ie the sphere). Just go ahead right now and get in the habit of using sketches to drive your shapes.

You only need to create one dimple.
- Draw a circle at the point of one triangle.
- Bisect it.
- Use revolve tool to create a sphere.
- Create a plane a 1/2 the radius of the circle below the plane of the circle. Draw the board outline, then extrude it.
- Use Combine|Cut operation to create the first dimple.
- Use Rectangular pattern to create the rest of one triangle. (Create double the number required and use the Suppress option to remove unnecessary dimples.)
- Use Mirror to create the inner triangle dimples.
- Use Circular pattern to complete the board.

Here's a screencast showing the technique:
Notes:
I created the rectangular pattern in the sketch because it's easier to show the technique that way. It would be better to just use the sketch to get the dimensions for the triangle and to create the sphere. Fusion 360 bogs down very quickly on large patterns in sketches, so it's better to pattern faces or features.

Hello,
Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
I have tried your technic so I have create one triangle oriented to the top and one to the bottom with a circle on each intersections.
I have used the rectangular pattern to duplicate it 13 time horizontally and 16 times vertically but each time it make crash the software. I have even try this on another computer but it is the same result each time.
Regards

Thanks @laughingcreek, I didn't realize you could select two different directions in a rectangular pattern. That makes it much easier to create this model.
@VGBenjamin, Try this:

Hello,
Thank you to both of you by combining your solutions I am able to do what I need. Well I still have an issue on this model to create the line between the holes but I have open another topic for it because it isn't exactly the same issue 🙂
